1 Nights / 2 Days
Best Time to Visit:
Dry Seasons (Best for wildlife viewing): June to October and January to February. Animals congregate around permanent water sources, making them easier to spot. The skies are also generally clearer, offering the best chances for magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Wet Seasons (Green, fewer crowds, good for birding): November, April, and May. The landscape is lush, and it's excellent for birdwatching as migratory birds are present. However, some roads can be challenging due to rain, and spotting wildlife might be harder due to denser vegetation.
Accommodation: Amboseli offers a range of lodges and tented camps both inside and just outside the park, catering to various budgets. Some popular options include:
Inside the Park: Ol Tukai Lodge, Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge.
Outside/Bordering the Park: Kibo Safari Camp, Sentrim Amboseli Camp, Amboseli Sopa Lodge, Kilima Safari Camp.
Transportation:
Road Safari: Most common. It's a scenic drive of approximately 4-5 hours from Nairobi to Amboseli, depending on traffic and road conditions. You'll typically travel in a safari minivan (more budget-friendly) or a 4x4 Land Cruiser Jeep (more comfortable and recommended for rougher terrain).
Fly-in Safari: More expensive but significantly cuts down travel time (about 45-60 minutes from Nairobi's Wilson Airport). Ideal if you have limited time or prefer to avoid long drives. Your lodge/camp will usually arrange transfers and game drives from the airstrip.
Morning (7:00 AM - 7:30 AM): Your professional English-speaking driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel in Nairobi (or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, JKIA).
Journey to Amboseli: Depart Nairobi and head south towards Amboseli National Park. The drive offers glimpses of rural Kenyan life and landscapes. You'll pass through small towns and see local communities.
Arrival & Lunch (Around 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM): Arrive at your chosen lodge or tented camp near/in Amboseli National Park. Check-in and enjoy a delicious lunch. Take some time to relax and settle in.
Afternoon Game Drive (3:00 PM - 6:30 PM): Head out for your first exciting game drive in Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is famous for its large herds of elephants, often seen against the stunning backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro (weather permitting, as the summit is often shrouded in clouds in the afternoon). You'll also search for lions, zebras, giraffes, buffalo, wildebeest, hippos (especially in the swamps), and a variety of bird species. The park's open plains make wildlife spotting relatively easy.
Evening: Return to your lodge/camp for dinner and overnight. Enjoy the tranquility of the bush.
Early Morning Game Drive (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM): This is the highlight of an Amboseli safari! Wake up before dawn for an early morning game drive. The early hours offer the best chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro in its full glory, usually clearest just after sunrise before the clouds roll in. This is also when predators are most active, and the light is perfect for photography. You'll witness the park coming alive with various animals.
Breakfast (Around 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM): Return to your lodge/camp for a hearty breakfast.
Check-out & Optional Activities: After breakfast, check out from your accommodation. Depending on your departure schedule and preferences, you might have time for:
Visit Observation Hill: Climb to the top of Observation Hill for panoramic views of the entire park, including the swamps where elephants and hippos gather, and the vast plains. This offers a different perspective and great photo opportunities.
Maasai Village Visit (Optional, extra cost): Learn about the rich culture and traditions of the Maasai people by visiting a nearby Maasai village. You can experience their dances, learn about their daily life, and purchase handicrafts (usually an additional cost, around $20-$30 per person).
En-route Game Drive: As you make your way out of the park, your guide will conduct a final game drive, hoping to catch any missed sightings.
Departure to Nairobi: Begin your scenic drive back to Nairobi.
Lunch (En Route): You'll typically have a packed lunch or stop at a suitable restaurant along the way.
Arrival in Nairobi (Around 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM): Arrive back in Nairobi and be dropped off at your hotel or transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for your onward flight.
