Best Time to Visit:
Dry Seasons (Ideal for beach activities and diving): December to March and July to October. The weather is generally sunny with calm waters.
Wet Seasons (Lower prices, lush scenery): April to June and November. Expect some rain, but it usually comes in short showers. Some water sports operators might close during heavy rain seasons (e.g., April-May).
Accommodation: Diani Beach offers a wide array of resorts, hotels, and villas, catering to all budgets, from luxurious all-inclusive resorts to more affordable guesthouses. Popular options include:
Swahili Beach Resort
Leisure Lodge Beach & Golf Resort
Diani Reef Beach Resort & Spa
Jacaranda Indian Ocean Beach Resort
Baobab Beach Resort & Spa
The Sands at Nomad
Many private villas and Airbnbs
Transportation to/from Diani Beach:
Fly-in: The quickest way is to fly into Ukunda Airstrip (UKA), which is just a short drive from Diani Beach. There are daily flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport (WIL).
Road: You can also take a bus or private transfer from Mombasa (Moi International Airport - MBA). The drive from Mombasa to Diani involves crossing the Likoni Ferry, which can sometimes have long queues.
Morning (Arrival & Check-in): If you're arriving on Day 1, aim for a morning flight to Ukunda Airstrip or an early start from Mombasa. Transfer to your chosen Diani Beach accommodation. Check-in, drop off your luggage, and perhaps enjoy a refreshing welcome drink.
Leisurely Lunch: Have lunch at your hotel's restaurant or explore one of the many beachfront restaurants in Diani. Enjoy fresh seafood and local Swahili cuisine.
Afternoon (Beach Time & Optional Water Sports):
Relax on the Beach: Spend the early afternoon relaxing on the pristine white sands of Diani Beach. Swim in the warm Indian Ocean, soak up the sun, or simply enjoy the calming sound of the waves.
Choose Your Water Adventure: Diani is a hub for water sports. Depending on your interest and energy levels, you can opt for:
Snorkeling: Many resorts offer snorkeling trips directly from the beach, or you can join a glass-bottom boat tour to explore the vibrant coral reefs just offshore.
Kitesurfing/Windsurfing: Diani is a world-class kitesurfing and windsurfing destination, especially during the Kaskazi (Dec-Mar) and Kusi (July-Sep) winds. Lessons and rentals are widely available.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) or Kayaking: Explore the calmer waters of the Kongo River estuary or paddle along the coastline.
Jet Skiing: For a more adrenaline-fueled experience.
Evening (Sunset & Dinner):
Sunset Stroll: Take a leisurely walk along the beach as the sun begins to set, painting the sky with beautiful colors.
Dinner at a Beachfront Restaurant: Enjoy a delightful dinner. Diani has numerous excellent restaurants, from casual beach shacks to upscale dining. Consider trying Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant for a unique dining experience in a natural coral cave (reservations essential).
Morning (Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park & Wasini Island Excursion):
Early Start (7:00 AM - 8:00 AM): This is a highly recommended full-day excursion. You'll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to Shimoni (about 1-1.5 hours drive south).
Dhow Cruise & Dolphin Spotting: Board a traditional dhow (sailing boat). As you sail towards Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park, keep an eye out for dolphins – they often swim alongside the boats!
Snorkeling/Diving in Kisite Marine Park: Dive into the crystal-clear waters of the marine park, famous for its incredible coral gardens, diverse fish species, turtles, and sometimes even whale sharks (seasonal, Oct-Mar). Snorkeling gear is usually provided. Certified divers can also arrange a dive here.
Wasini Island & Seafood Lunch: After your marine exploration, head to Wasini Island. Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch (often prepared by locals on the island) and explore the charming village, visit the coral garden, or learn about the historical slave caves.
Late Afternoon (Return to Diani & Relaxation):
Return to Diani: You'll be transferred back to your hotel in Diani in the late afternoon (around 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM).
Relax/Freshen Up: Take some time to relax after your day on the ocean.
Evening (Farewell Dinner & Leisure):
Farewell Dinner: Enjoy your last dinner in Diani. Perhaps try a different restaurant or revisit a favorite.
Optional: Enjoy some live music at a beach bar, or simply relax at your hotel.
