The Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro, and at Njofu Expedition, we appreciate its charm and accessibility. Also known as the 鈥淐oca-Cola route,鈥 it is the oldest and most well-known path. People like the Marangu route because it has a gentle slope and is thought to be the easiest path on the mountain. It is also the only route with sleeping huts that are set up like dormitories.
This route up Kilimanjaro summit needs a minimum of five days, but it鈥檚 unlikely that you鈥檒l make it to the top in that amount of time. At Njofu Expedition, we highly recommend spending an extra day on the mountain to get used to the altitude when climbing Kilimanjaro via the Marangu route.
However, Njofu Expedition does not lead climbs on the Marangu route due to its popularity. The path goes up and down the mountain on the same trail, offering limited views. Despite this, Marangu remains a popular choice, especially during the rainy season when the huts provide more comfort. At Njofu Expedition, we aim to provide you with a trekking experience that offers diverse views and a unique adventure.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be greeted by a Njofu Expedition driver, who will take you to your hotel in Moshi town. There, you鈥檒l meet your guide, who will provide details about your upcoming trek and check your gear to ensure you have everything needed for the mountain. If you forgot any equipment, you can rent it on this day.
Overnight at Lindrin Lodge or Park View Hotel.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Today鈥檚 goal is to reach the Kibo Hut, which typically takes around 5 to 6 hours to reach. Once there, you鈥檒l enjoy an early dinner and head to bed early as the night will be brief.
The route spans approximately 9.5 kilometers (5.9 miles) and is expected to take about 7 hours. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in your journey with Njofu Expedition.
Today is 鈥淭he Big Day鈥 with Njofu Expedition, the moment you鈥檝e been waiting for. Around midnight, your final ascent begins, and it will be both demanding and rewarding. As you pass Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb steadily continues. At sunrise, you鈥檒l reach Gillman鈥檚 Point (5681m), the edge of Kilimanjaro鈥檚 crater. The sun will start to warm the land, helping you forget the cold of the night. After 1鈥2 more hours of hiking, you鈥檒l reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. Once you descend to Kibo Hut, a warm meal will be waiting for you. After a well-deserved 1- to 2-hour rest, you鈥檒l head down to Horombo Hut.
The total distance covered is 22 km (13.7 mi), taking between 12 and 15 hours. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.
The final stage of the trek takes you through the heath and moor zone to Mandara Hut (2700m), where a warm lunch awaits. You鈥檒l soon pass through the tropical rainforest again, and after 6 hours of hiking, you鈥檒l return to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). Once you鈥檝e completed your trek with the mountain guides, a short transfer will take you back to your hotel in Moshi.
